On Sept. 22, 2023, Indy Coffee Club opened their new exhibition for Fotoseptiembre “A Day in the Life in San Antonio,” a photo show on film sponsored by Indy Coffee Club’s film supply club and local photo lab: Digitdal Pro Lab. The showcase was inspired by the work “A Day in the Life of America,’’ by Ricky Smolan, where 200 photojournalists were sent across America to capture the life of the nation in one day.
Similarly, the Indy Camera Club took on a project for Fotoseptiembre, a yearly celebration of photography throughout San Antonio and the Texas Hill Country, featuring eight talented, local photographers of all experience backgrounds, from hobbyist amateurs to well-trained professionals, to capture the life of San Antonio in a single day. The featured photographers included Adolfo Acosta, Lynn Cano, Vito Cantu, Eddie Fernandez, Amanda Gallegos, Abby Gonzales, Jill Huskin and Caleb Saenz. Additionally, the clubhouse sells a wide array of film rolls and photo supplies as part of the film supply club portion of their shop. These photographs were taken on 35mm film. Their results were intriguing to look at as they displayed a diverse set of individuals’ perspectives of San Antonio. Each perspective____reflects different parts of the community and the culturelllthroughout the city. Some photos showcased individuals with stories from their respective local communities, while others displayed the hidden beauty of San Antonio and its rich Hispanic influences.
For the opening reception, the turnout was large and filled the clubhouse. Seeing so many people support the community and gather to view and reflect on different aspects from varying perspectives of San Antonio was heartwarming and exciting for the photographers. The photo show became a celebration of the city as there was much to be appreciated through the photographs. Many families were present at the Fotoseptiembre event, pointing at the photographs of themselves or familiar places, all different generations admiring the photos on film. Each photographer highlighted different things according to their style from buildings and landscapes to people. “There are some places that look so familiar, but it just feels so weird seeing it in a different way,” says Ana Martinez, freshman political science major at St. Mary’s University. “[I’m] really thankful for the opportunity [and] glad the community came together for the love of film!” Said Amanda Gallegos, a local, featured photographer. The photo show will remain on display inside the Indy Coffee clubhouse for a month until Oct. 31.
