With enormous ships, opulent facilities and extensive itineraries, the cruise industry is no stranger to creating headlines in the tourism sector. One cruise ship, the “Icon of the Seas,” is scheduled to depart next year, assuring guests of a memorable voyage. Underneath this opulent journey is a nuanced story of environmental issues and business opportunities.
The “Icon of the Seas” is not your typical sea vessel. According to Cruise Critic, this ocean giant offers a dizzying assortment of features and services, including fine eating establishments, entertainment venues and leisure areas that are comparable to five-star hotels. This cruise ship is built to offer the best holiday experience with its expansive decks and ability to accommodate thousands of guests.
Despite the ship’s immense size and capability, there are concerns about its effects on the environment and local economies. Political science major, Naya Harb stated, “Even though the appeal of such a luxurious ship is understandable we need to start thinking of the future of our planet and environment.” The negative environmental impacts of cruise ships, especially large ones like the “Icon of the Seas,” have drawn much criticism. These concerns include various topics, such as wastewater discharge, air pollution and the effect on coastal habitats.
Marine Insight notes that the “Icon of the Seas” and other cruise ships carry passengers who are willing to spend the money on a variety of products and services, including dining at nearby restaurants and buying souvenirs. These purchases bring in money for neighbourhood businesses, increase expansion in infrastructure and the local tourism sector, and support the port cities’ economic growth and local economy. The “Icon of the Seas” has the potential to draw more vacationers, cruise aficionados, and boost the economies of the places it visits. With its enormous potential, it may considerably increase regional economies by opening doors for independent retailers and regional craftspeople.
The “Icon of the Seas” emphasizes the necessity of striking a balance between economic development and environmental preservation. The cruise industry must be aware of its environmental effect and take action to reduce its damage. The use of cleaner technologies and fuels, which lower emissions and pollutants, is a strategy for limiting environmental impact. Harb observed, “Even though there are strategies for safer and cleaner transportation, not enough companies are enforcing these strategies.” Stricter
laws and sustainable practices are extremely important in preserving marine life and coastal habitats. A step towards fostering ecologically friendly behavior requires passengers and cruise companies to increase their knowledge of responsible tourism practices.
Although the “Icon of the Seas” provides travellers with an opportunity for a lavish and
wonderful holiday, there are environmental issues and business potential hidden behind its luxurious exterior. The cruise industry, which operates large ships like the “Icon of the Seas,” must carefully traverse these challenging seas. Striking a balance between maximizing the economic advantages of tourism and reducing the environmental impact is essential. Future mega-cruise ships like the “Icon of the Seas” and others will set sail, and everyone has a joint duty to promote ethical tourism and sustainable travel. To guarantee that the seas and coastal areas are vibrant and healthy for future generations one must take part and adhere to these values.
